Effects of UVA radiation on the development and reproduction of Sclerodermus alternatusi (Hymenoptera: Bethylidae)

Abstract: 【Aim】Sclerodermus alternatusi, is an excellent parasitic wasp of Monochamus alternatus. This study aims to clarify the effects of ultraviolet A(UVA)(365 nm) radiation of the eggs of S. alternatusi on its growth, development and fecundity, providing references for optimizing the mass rearing technology of S. alternatusi. 【Methods】In a dark chamber, the eggs of S. alternatusi were radiated with UVA lamp for 3, 6 and 9 h, respectively. Daily survival numbers of eggs, larvae and pupae were counted. Key parameters including egg duration, larval duration, pupal duration, adult longevity and number of eggs laid per female were recorded. An age-stage, two-sex life table was constructed, and the population dynamics of S. alternatusi under UVA stress over the next 60 d were predicted using TIMING-MSChart software. 【Results】Compared with the blank control non-subjected to radiation, UVA radiation significantly reduced the survival rate of S. alternatusi, with longer radiation duration resulting in lower survival rates. Furthermore, UVA radiation affected the growth and development of S. alternatusi. After S. alternatusi eggs were radiated by UVA, the egg duration and pupal duration in the 6- and 9-h UVA radiation groups were significantly shortened, while the male adult longevity in the 3- and 6-h radiation groups was significantly shortened, as compared to those in the blank control group. UVA radiation also significantly influenced the fecundity of S. alternatusi. The average numbers of eggs laid per female in the 6- and 9-h UVA radiation groups were significantly higher than that in the blank control group. The female age-specific fecundity curves further demonstrated that 6- and 9-h UVA radiations enhanced the fecundity of S. alternatusi. Additionally, population parameter analysis result revealed that both 3- and 9-h UVA radiations significantly decreased the intrinsic rate of increase (r) and finite rate of increase (λ) of S. alternatusi, while all UVA radiation treatments (3-, 6- and 9-h UVA radiations) significantly shortened the mean generation time (T), compared to the blank control. 【Conclusion】UVA radiation of the eggs of S. alternatusi can significantly affect its developmental duration and female adult fecundity. The findings of this study provide a theoretical basis for elucidating the resistance response mechanisms of S. alternatusi under ultraviolet stress, as well as practical references for its large-scale rearing.
