Abstract: The Chinese army worm (Pseudaletia separata(/I)(Walker)is a widely distributed serious pest of field crops in China. Laboratory and field experioments for the comtrol of this worm were comducted in Peking and Honan Province with DDT, BHC, aldrin, dieldrin, chlordane toxaphene, and their mixtures during 1956-1957. The results of experiments indicated that a mixture cintaining 5 per cent DDT and BHC of 0.5 per cent of gamma isomer in the form of dust at the ratio 1:1 of 1:2 applied at the rate of 22.5 kilo per hecter give quickest and highest kill. The mixtuer has higher efficiency against the army worm than DDT alone. BHC dust comtaining 0.5 to 3 per cent of gamma isomer has almost no effect against the older larvae. A mixtuer of 5 to 3 per cent toxaphene plus 0.5 or 1 per cent Bhc at the ratio 1:1 has also better control than toxaphene alone. The susceptibility of different instars to defferent insecticides was studied, their resistance to the toxic action increased as the insect developed. Field control demonstrations on large scale (using above formulation) were conducted in Peking and Honan province with very successful result. Army worm population was reducted 95 to 100 per cent arter 1-2 days when a mixtuer of 5 per cent DDTplus 0.5 or 1 per cent gamma BHC dust at ratio 1:1, or 1:2 applied at the rate of 22.5 kilo per hectre give also good control, but 3 per cent gamma BHC dust appear to be less effective.
