Abstract: The results of RAPD analysis of genetic variation among 17 geographicpopulations of cotton bollworm (CBW) showed that these populations could be divided into 4 distinct groups. (1)Sanya (SY) group, (2)Shache (3) group, (4)Hami (HM) group and (4)the rest (14 populations). The SY group had the longest genetic distance to the other groups and the 4th group had rather few genetic variations or much more gene similarity among populations. The genetic distance between Huanghe River Valley population and Liaohe River Valley population was the shortest. It was found by individual RAPD analysis that the individuals possessing the same genetic characteristicswere distributed disorderly in different geographic populations, indicating that there are frequent gene exchanges among populations from different ecological regions. Lastly, the reason of variation among geographic populations of CBW was discussed.
