Morphology of the digestive system in Dermatophagoides farinae (Hughes)(Acariformes: Pyroglyphidae)

Abstract: The digestive system of Dermatophagoides farinae (Hughes) was dissected and observed with light microscopy. The results show that the digestive system consists of prebuccal cavity, foregut, midgut, hindgut, anus and salivary gland. The prebuccal cavity is surrounded by gnathosoma; the foregut consists of a muscular pharynx and an esophagus which extends through the brain; the midgut is divided into the anterior midgut with a pair of caeca and the posterior midgut; the hindgut consists of a relative broad colon and a narrow rectum; the salivary gland is irregular in shape and located in the front of the brain. The ramus, configuration and dermal cell types of the alimentary canal were described.
