Laboratory experiments employing playback of the recorded Second Male Vibrational Signal (SMVS) were designed here to clarify its underlying inhibition on the reproduction of Nilaparvata lugens, and the following results were obtained. (1) A substantial decrease of mating rate was observed at 1~12 h playback, but not at 24 h playback of SMVS. (2) In the stated reproduction inhibition, the normal active response to courtship signal from opposite sex was depressed greatly in female and slightly in male N. lugens tested. Additionally, much less frequent signal production was detected on the treated female, which inevitably became an obstacle to their meeting. (3) Though causing no obvious decrease of insemination rate in copulated N. lugens and the amount of oviposition, playback of SMVS surely gave rise to worse insemination quality, as indicated by smaller spermatophores and less well-developed eggs

The sex-specific photoreceptor central retinula cells R7 extend to ventral region from the dorsal region in male dipterous insects, including Musca domestica, Calliphora erythrocephala, Tabanus mandarinus and Atylotus miser Szilady. The rhabdom of the sex-specific central retinula cell R7 extends to the basement membrane and keeps abreast of the rhabdom of the central retinula cell R8 in male Musca domestica, Tabanus mandarinus and Atylotus miser Szilady, but does not extend to the basement membrane in male Calliphora erythrocephala. The sexspecific central retinula cells in the compound eye of the female dipteran are only distributed in the ventral region of the compound eye and are less numerous than central retinula cells R8 in the same region

The inheritance of resistance to cartap in diamondback moth Plutella xylostella (L.)is evaluated from the response of fourth instar larvae to cartap treatment. The insects used for the study are taken from laboratory reared resistant and susceptible strains. The results of genetic analysis indicate that cartap resistance in the diamondback moth (DBM) appears to be controlled by two or more autosomal genes and the major gene(s) involved is incompletely dominant The sensitivites of cartapresistant strains to 6 insecticides have been tested The results show that the resistant strain has marked cross-resistance to dimehypo and slight cross-resistance to DDVP and methidathion, but no cross-resistance to deltamethrin, methomyl and mipcin. The results of study on activities of AChE and CarE show that the resistance of the DBM larvae to cartap is not related to AChE or CarE.

The properties of Na-K-ATPase in the nerve system of house flies were described For-Na-K ATPase the optimum pH and temperature were 7.0~8.0and 35~40℃ respectively, the Km value was 0.22 mmol/L ATP and Vmax was approximately 555.56 nmol Pi/(mg·protein·min). The Na-K-ATPase activities in susceptible (SP) and Del-R、2Cl-R house fly strains were determined. The results indicated that there was no significant difference in Na-K-ATPase activities among the three strains. Inhibition of deltamethrin and permethrin on Na-K-ATPase activity was also studied. The results showed that the two pyrethroids inhibited obviously the Na-K-ATPase activity in the susceptible strain, but no effect in the resistant strain

In this paper, the titre and precise ratio of multi-components of Ancylis sativa Liu sex pheromone were determined by using analytical technique of single sex pheromone gland. The results showed that: (1)the female sex pheromone contained two isomers, i.e. E9-12∶Ac and Z9-12∶Ac, (2) the sex pheromone production of females had a diel periodicity. The female moths began to produce sex pheromone at the onset of the scotophaes and the quantity increased gradually. Pheromone production peak occurred at the 6.5 hour of the second scotophase, (3) the pheromone titres released by females of various generations are different. The pheromone titre released by females of the overwintering generation or the second generation was much higher than that of the first generation, but the ratios of the 2-isomeric components in different generations were the same.

The mating behaviour of Haemaphysalis longicornis consisted of 7 stages. Bioassay suggested that male response was regulated by the sex pheromone secreted by females. Blocking up female fovea, male response was inhibited; while topical application of 2,6-DCP or extract of female foveal glands could restore it. A highest level of 2,6-DCP content (11.12ng/individual) was reached during the 1st~2nd day after attachment when analysis by GC. The amounts of 2,6-DCP declined on the 3rd~5th day after attachment just before mating, but maintained at a relatively constant level. After mating, it declined singificantly and became undetectable after engorgement.

Measurements of activities of glyceraldehyde-phosphate dehydrogenase (GAPDH), glycerol-3-phosphate dehydrogenase (GDH),lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), 3-hydroxyacyl-CoA dehydrogenase (HOAD) and citrate synthase (CS) in the flight muscle of pupal and adult oriental armyworm, Mythimna separata (Walker), a migratory noctuid showed that most of these enzyme activities were significantly higher in the adults than in the pupal, indicating greater activity related to energy metabolism in adult than in pupal stage. Following eclosion, glycolytic activities was higher than lipid metabolism in the first day of the adult life. From the second to the fifth day of the adult life, carbohydrate and lipid metabolism were equally important since the ratio of GAPDH∶HOAD was 1.0.Lipid metabolism, however, seemed to be superior to carbohydrate metabolism by day seven. High levels of GDH and LDH activities from the first to the seventh day of the adult life suggest that both aerobic and anaerobic metabolism were active in the flight muscle of the adult during this period. And high levels of CS activity in the same tissue and same period provided the energy necessary for powerful flight of the moth. The ratio of GAPDH∶HOAD suggests that not only lipid, but also carbohydrate could be utilized as energy substrates during sustained flight of the moth.

The foregut armature of 4 species of grasshoppers belonging to 3 genera (Catantopidae) has been comparatively studied by stereo-microphotography. The results with 4 illustrations show that the foregut armature of the 3 genera has some common features, meanwhile, it also indicates that the relationship between the 2 genera Yunnanacris and Sinopodisma is closer. Therefore, the foregut armature reflects certain taxonomic morphology.

The effect of mutual interference and heterogeneity on Coccinella septempunctata was investigated. It was found that the more wheat stalks the adult ladybugs encountered, which meant more interference was met during predation, the lower the predation efficiency was observed. The interspecific mutual interference had more influence on predation of adult ladybug than the intraspecific mutual interference did in C. septempunctata and Harmonia axyricis. The correlation of intraspecific competition strength (I) and the number of ladybug (P) in H. axyricis could be described as I=0.0012+1.4072lgP for female, I=0.0058+1.3942 lgP for male and I=-0.0072+0.7234lgP for female C. septempunctata. The correlation of interspecific competition strength between C. septempunctata and H. axyricis (I) and the number of natural enemies (P) could be described as I=0.0539+1.1167lgP for female C. septempunctata and female H. axyricis, I=0.0018+1.1944lgP for female H. axyricis and male C. septempunctata.

For most species, diapause is a developmental option and individuals have the capacity to determine whether or not they enter that state by monitoring changes in environmental and internal conditions through the mediation of endocrinological mechanisms. Diapause intervenes in all the major stages of the life cycle, and the egg stage is one of the most suitable stages for diapause. This paper is a review on insect diapause, with special emphasis on egg diapause in the following areas of research: individual ecology, environmental physiology, endocrinology, biochemistry and molecular biology.
